In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, 1 Stand up for worship during the night, except for some part of it. 2 Half of it, or lessen it a little, 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. 10 Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while; 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 food that chokes and painful punishment 13 on the Day when the earth and the mountains will be convulsed and the mountains will [crumble and] become like a sand-dune on the move! 14 Verily We! We have sent unto you an apostle, a witness over you, even as We sent unto Fir'awn an apostle. 15 However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
