O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 Keep watch all the night except some, 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 or a little more, but recite the Quran slowly and distinctly. 4 We are about to reveal to you a mighty word. 5 Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 How, then, if you refuse to acknowledge the truth, will you protect yourselves on that Day which shall turn the hair of children grey, 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
