In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 worship (God) for a few hours at night. 2 Half of it,- or a little less, 3 Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 The Sustainer of the east and the west [is He]: there is no deity save Him: hence, ascribe to Him alone the power to determine thy fate, 9 Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. 10 Leave those to Me who deny, the lovers of ease and comfort; and bear with them for a while. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And food that chokes, and a painful punishment. 13 On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 Verily, this is an admonition, therefore whosoever will, let him take a Path to His Lord! 19
