In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 A half of it or a little less 3 Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation. 4 Behold, We shall bestow upon thee a weighty message 5 [and,] verily, the hours of night impress the mind most strongly and speak with the clearest voice, 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. 9 And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 We have in store for them heavy fetters and a blazing Fire, 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down. 14 We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 If you persist in denying the truth how will you escape the Day that will turn the children's hair grey. 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
