O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 Half of it, or lessen it a little, 3 Or increase a little upon it, and recite the Qur’an slowly in stages. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. 10 Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little, 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 food which chokes (them), and a painful torment. 13 On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. 14 Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger, 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
