In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 Half of it,- or a little less, 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 We are about to reveal to you a mighty word. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave Me Alone to deal with the beliers (those who deny My Verses, etc.), and those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, 13 On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. 14 Verily We! We have sent unto you an apostle, a witness over you, even as We sent unto Fir'awn an apostle. 15 but Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? 17 The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled. 18 Verily this is a reminder. So let him who desires take the way to his Lord. 19
