20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, 1 worship (God) for a few hours at night. 2 Half of it,- or a little less, 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 Verily there is for thee by day occupation prolonged. 7 Remember the Name of your Lord and dedicate yourself devoutly to Him. 8 [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs. 9 And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 We have indeed sent a Noble Messenger towards you, a present witness over you the way We had sent a Noble Messenger towards Firaun. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
