The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise and give warning! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then looked he, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
