The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And your garments do purify, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Burning the skins! 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
