The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And your clothing purify 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
