The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he thought; 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
