The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and defilement flee! 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he beheld, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
