The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he looked around, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
