The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And your clothing purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
