The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 stay away from sins 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
