The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 shun uncleanness; 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
