O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 purify your garments; 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked around, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
