The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
