The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 thy robes purify 4 And all abomination shun! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 He planned and plotted. 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he looked, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
