The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then looked he, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
