The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
