The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 He looked (at others); 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
