The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise, and warn! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 scorching the flesh; 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
