The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 And all defilement shun! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he thought; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
