The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 thy robes purify 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he beheld, 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
