The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 He looked (at others); 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
