The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 and defilement flee! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 and who still desires more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Scorching the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
