The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and defilement flee! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he beheld, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
