The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
