The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And your garments do purify, 4 Pollution shun! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
