The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 stay away from sins 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he thought; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
