The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then looked he, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
