The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and defilement flee! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
