The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he thought; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
