The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made things easy for them. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
