The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked round; 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
