The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
