Nay, and by the moon, 32 and the night when it retreats 33 and the morn when it dawns! 34 This is but one of the mighty (portents), 35 a warning to mortal man 36 A warning unto him of you who shall go forward or who chooseth to lag behind. 37 Every soul is held in pledge against its own deeds, 38 except the Companions of the Right. 39 who will be in Paradise 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 "what led you into hell?" 42 They will answer: “We were not among those who observed Prayer, 43 "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; 44 And plunged into useless things with those who were obstinate, 45 And we used to call the day of judgment a lie; 46 “Till death overcame us.” 47 The mediation of no mediators will avail them then. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 as though they were terrified asses 50 That had fled from a lion? 51 Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled. 52 No, indeed they have no fear of the Everlasting Life. 53 Nay! it is surely an admonition. 54 So whosoever willeth may heed it. 55 But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness. 56
