Nay; I swear by the moon, 32 And by the night when it withdraws, 33 and the morning when it appears, 34 Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes), 35 as a warner to mortals. 36 a warning to everyone of you whether he would like to come forward or lag behind. 37 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, 38 except those of the right hand 39 In Gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another, 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 "What has caused you to enter Hell?" 42 They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; 43 and we did not feed the poor, 44 we indulged in vain arguments along with those who indulged in them; 45 and we cried lies to the Day of Doom, 46 till the Certain came to us.' -- 47 Then there will not profit them intercesion of the interceders. 48 What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder, 49 As if they were alarmed donkeys 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 Indeed, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls. 52 Nay, but they do not [believe in and hence, do not] fear the life to come. 53 No, indeed, surely, this is a Reminder. 54 Let him then who heeds remember it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
