I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And the night when on the wane, 33 And [by] the morning when it brightens, 34 This is but one of the mighty (portents), 35 a warning to humans, 36 alike to every one of you, who want to go forward or hang back. 37 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, 38 save the Companions of the Right; 39 Sitting in the gardens, asking 40 concerning the sinners, 41 "What has brought you into the Fire of Hell ?" 42 They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 45 and rejected the Day of Judgment 46 until certainty came upon us [in death]." 47 The intercession of their intercessors shall not benefit them. 48 So what is the matter with them that they turn away from the advice? 49 as though they were frightened wild asses, 50 fleeing from a lion? 51 Is it that everyone of them wants to receive a heavenly book addressed to him personally? 52 No! But they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 No indeed; surely it is a Reminder; 54 So whoever wills may heed advice from it. 55 And they shall not heed unless Allah willeth. He is the Lord of piety, and the Lord of forgiveness. 56
