I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And the night when it departs, 33 By the morning when it brighteneth. 34 That (Hell) is surely one of the greater (signs), 35 As a warning unto men, 36 To any of you that chooses to go forward (by working righteous deeds), or to remain behind (by commiting sins), 37 Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 In Gardens they will question 40 About the criminals, 41 What led you into the Scorching Fire? 42 They will reply: 'We were not among those who prayed 43 nor did we feed the destitute. 44 We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders, 45 And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 46 till the Certain came to us.' -- 47 Then the intercession of the intercessors shall not profit them. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 As though they were frightened asses 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 Rather each one of them desires that he should be given open Books. 52 By no means! Aye, they fear not the Hereafter. 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So, whoever wills may benefit from it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
