I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And the night when on the wane, 33 and the morning when it appears, 34 surely it is one of the greatest things 35 A warning to mortals, 36 To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind. 37 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 In Gardens, they seek answers, 40 Of evil-doers: 41 "What has brought you into hell-fire?" 42 They will answer: "We did not fulfil our devotional obligations, 43 “Nor used to feed the needy.” 44 And plunged into useless things with those who were obstinate, 45 And we used to call the day of judgment a lie; 46 Until the certainty (of death) had come upon us. 47 And so, of no benefit to them could be the intercession of any that would intercede for them. 48 What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition 49 As if they were frightened (wild) donkeys. 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled. 52 This will certainly never be the case! In fact, they are not afraid of the Day of Judgment. 53 Nay, verily, this is an admonition 54 and whoever wills may take it to heart. 55 they will only take heed if God so wills: He is the Lord who is worthy to be feared: the Lord of forgiveness. 56
