The Human (Al-Insan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Was there not a period of time when man was nothing worth mentioning? 1 Verily, it is We who have created man out of a drop of sperm intermingled, so that We might try him [in his later life]: and therefore We made him a being endowed with hearing and sight. 2 We showed him the Way: whether he be grateful or ungrateful (rests on his will). 3 Surely We have prepared for the unbelievers chains, fetters, and a Blaze. 4 Verily the pious shall drink of a cup whereof the admixture is like unto camphor. 5 A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah drink, making it gush forth abundantly, 6 [The truly virtuous are] they [who] fulfil their vows, and stand in awe of a Day the woe of which is bound to spread far and wide, 7 They feed the destitute, orphans, and captives for the love of God, saying, 8 They say to them, “We give you food, only for the sake of Allah – we do not seek any reward or thanks from you.” 9 "Verily, We fear from our Lord a Day, hard and distressful, that will make the faces look horrible (from extreme dislikeness to it)." 10 Wherefore Allah shall preserve them from the evil of that Day, and shall cause them to meet brightness and joy. 11 and will reward them for all their patience in adversity with a garden [of bliss] and with [garments of] silk. 12 Reclining in the (Garden) on raised thrones, they will see there neither the sun's (excessive heat) nor (the moon's) excessive cold. 13 And the shades of the (Garden) will come low over them, and the bunches (of fruit), there, will hang low in humility. 14 Rounds of silver cups and silver beakers, looking like glass, will be presented upon them. 15 Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure. 16 Therein they shall be served a cup flavoured with ginger, 17 (The water of) a spring therein, named Salsabil. 18 ۞ Immortal youths shall go about them; when thou seest them, thou supposest them scattered pearls, 19 And when you see there, you shall see blessings and a great kingdom. 20 On their bodies will be garments of the finest green silk and brocade, and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver; and their Lord will give them a purest draught to drink. 21 Verily this is for you by way of recompense, and your endeavour hath been accepted. 22
