The Human (Al-Insan)
31 verses, revealed in Medina after The All Compassionate (Al-Rahman) before Divorce (Al-Talaaq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HAS THERE [not] been an endless span of time before man [appeared - a time] when he was not yet a thing to be thought of? 1 We created the human being from the union of sperm and egg to test him. We gave him hearing and vision. 2 We surely showed him the way that he may either be grateful or deny. 3 Verily, We have prepared for the disbelievers iron chains, iron collars, and a blazing Fire. 4 Verily the pious shall drink of a cup whereof the admixture is like unto camphor. 5 A fountain from which the servants of Allah shall drink; they make it to flow a (goodly) flowing forth. 6 They fulfil their vows, and fear a day whose evil is upon the wing; 7 those who, for the love of Him, feed the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, 8 [Saying], "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude. 9 Surely we fear from our Lord a stern, distressful day. 10 So Allah shall guard them against the woe of that Day, and will procure them freshness and joy, 11 And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments]. 12 They will recline therein on couches and they will find neither excessive heat nor cold. 13 And close upon them will be the shades thereof, and low will hang the clusters thereof greatly. 14 Passed round will be silver flagons and goblets made of glass, 15 crystal-like, [but] of silver - the measure whereof they alone will determine. 16 And they shall be given to drink from a cup whose mixture is ginger, 17 A fountain there, called Salsabil. 18 ۞ They will be served by immortal youths who look like scattered pearls. 19 Whitherto you look around, you will see an abundance of bliss and the glories of a great kingdom. 20 They [i.e., the virtuous] shall be attired in garments of fine green silk and rich brocade and will be adorned with bracelets of silver. Their Lord will give them a pure wine to drink. 21 Behold, this is a recompense for you, and your striving is thanked.' 22
