The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ OF WHAT ARE they asking one another? 1 (It is) of the awful tidings, 2 Concerning which they are in disagreement. 3 By no means! anon they shall know. 4 Again, indeed, they shall know! 5 HAVE WE NOT made the earth a resting-place [for you,] 6 The mountains tent-pins? 7 And (have We not) created you in pairs, 8 and gave you repose in sleep, 9 The night a covering, 10 and We made the day for a livelihood. 11 We have built above you seven mighty heavens, 12 (the sun) as a shining torch 13 And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water, 14 Thereby to produce grain and plant, 15 and gardens luxuriant. 16 Surely the Day of Decision is an appointed time, 17 On that Day when the trumpet shall be sounded, you shall come in droves, 18 And the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors, 19 and when the mountains are made to vanish as if they had been a mirage. 20 Indeed hell is lying in ambush. 21 For the exorbitant a receptacle. 22 In which they will remain for ages [unending]. 23 Finding neither sleep nor any thing to drink 24 save boiling water and a stinking fluid -- 25 a befitting recompense for their deeds. 26 For lo! they looked not for a reckoning; 27 They called Our revelations false with strong denial. 28 And We have kept recorded everything in a Book, accounted for. 29 [So We shall say], "Taste, then, [the fruit of your evil doings,] for now We shall bestow on you nothing but more and more suffering!" 30
