The News (Al-Naba')
40 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej) before The Snatchers (Al-Naze'aat)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Of what do they ask one another? 1 (It is) of the awful tidings, 2 that they are in utter disagreement? 3 No indeed; they shall soon know! 4 Nay! Nay! they shall soon know. 5 Have We not made the earth as a cradle 6 and the mountains as pegs (to anchor the earth)? 7 And We created you in pairs, 8 And We made your sleep to be rest (to you), 9 And have appointed the night as a cloak, 10 And made the day for livelihood 11 And built seven strong roofs above you. 12 And have made (therein) a shinning lamp (sun). 13 And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water 14 so that We may thereby bring forth grain and vegetation, 15 and gardens luxuriant. 16 Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time, 17 The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes 18 And the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors, 19 And the mountains will have been removed away, and they will have become as mirage. 20 Truly Hell is as a place of ambush, 21 a return for the insolent, 22 therein they shall abide for ages, 23 They will not taste therein cool or any drink. 24 only burning despair and ice-cold darkness: 25 a fitting requital, 26 For lo! they looked not for a reckoning; 27 and they cried loud lies to Our signs; 28 We have kept account of everything in a book. 29 [So We shall say], "Taste, then, [the fruit of your evil doings,] for now We shall bestow on you nothing but more and more suffering!" 30
