He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 How We pour water in showers 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olives and palms 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
