He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 to him thou attendest 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fearfully, 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted and purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 So man must look at his food. 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 Olives and dates, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
