He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 and in awe [of God] 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honoured leaves 13 most exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And We made corn grow, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And olives and palms 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
