He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him you attend; 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And whereas he fears, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 (It is) in Records held (greatly) in honour (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz). 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
